You will be given the opportunity to sit NCEA assessments this year, but the credits will be banked for you until next year when you move into Year 11. Work Habits In Year 10 the onus is really on YOU to work.Your teacher is there to point you in the right direction.Get into good work habits at the start of the year: JBe organised – keep notes up to date and use a diary/other system for recording homework JMeet all deadlines for homework and internal assessment JWrite detailed answers to show your understanding JRead up on topics studied in class. JAsk for help to improve your understanding JAttend revision classes when they are offered Doing the bare minimum will earn you a low grade. Attendance Any absences will mean you will miss vital information. It is your responsibility to get all missed information from a classmate. Assessment Internal Assessment Preparation During the year you will have several opportunities to complete tasks for each assessment. You will choose one draft and complete it to publication standard for assessment. Your teacher may use some of these methods to help you get the best grade you can: -provide templates for you to write your answers -check your progress at each stage (planning, processing, drafting, layout, final version etc) -talk with you to make sure you have included all the appropriate information/responses you can and that you have met all the criteria for the standard -refer to your written class work, assignments, practice tests etc for appropriate standards to find evidence of achievement beyond that shown in your assessment work -offer you another chance to present your work again -offer you another similar assessment opportunity. Your teacher will record your grade for each practice assessment for external achievement standards.These grades will be important if you need to apply for compassionate consideration.Attendance in class and at assessments is important to ensure the authenticity of your work and that there are enough results to refer to if you need to apply compassionate consideration. Authenticity Teachers may use these methods to ensure that all the assessment work you hand in is done by you: -refer to their knowledge of your style and strengths -make sure that most of the work is done in class -keep your notes and drafts and compare them with your finished work -conference with you to establish your understanding of the work you submitted -require all your sources of information and opinion to be acknowledged -record your live performances -monitor and check your work in progress -change the context of assessments from one year to the next. Absences and Missed Assessment If a student cannot hand in an assignment on time, or do an in-class test or practical activity on the day, then they must apply to their teacher as soon as they know they will be late with an assignment or will be absent, or as soon as they return to school. Exemptions and extensions will only be given under exceptional circumstances. Exemptions and extensions must be applied for well before the deadline and in the case of illness, must be supported by a medical certificate.Students must collect the “Missed Assessment” application from the front office. “Missed Assessment” application, the HOL may decide to:
Grant an extension
Set a new assessment date
Deny the application (and award no credit for the standards) concerned
Award an assessed grade (aggregate)
